Birding safari tours in Rwanda are one of the very much enjoyed activities while in any of the Parks in Rwanda. There are various places in Rwanda which keep several bird species and these include Akagera National Park, Nyungwe Forest National Park, Volcanoes National Park and Gishwati Forest Reserve and many other.
Though Rwanda consists of many places inhabiting birds, the best place for the birders in Rwanda should be Akagera National Park because the Park protects over 400 bird species which will give a beautiful sight to a birder. The Park is found in the eastern parts of Rwanda and it is less than 3 hours drive from Kigali city regardless of the speed you will be driving at though you are recommended to drive at a speed of 40km/hr. which a law in Rwanda and this is to reduce on the rate of accidents. The Park consists of a lake which is fed by Kagera River and from there you will too enjoy a brilliant view of the aquatic birds.
However, on your Rwanda birding tours you will not only see the various species of birds but you will also see other animals such as Lions, Elephants, Giraffes, Buffaloes, Rhinos, Leopards plus the crocodiles and hippos which live in Lake Ihema. The Park consists of good luxury and mid-range lodges where you will live in and they include; Ruzizi Tented Lodge and Akagera Game Lodge.
Volcanoes National Park found only two-and-a-half-hour drive from Kigali is another best destination for birders who will wish to go birding to Rwanda. From the Park you will get to see other bird species which you would not have seen in other Parks in Rwanda thus if you go birding in Rwanda, you are encouraged to also visit Volcanoes National Park because it protects almost 200 bird species.
In the Park you will be able to see a variety of attractive creatures such as bush buck, black-fronted duiker, spotted hyena, buffaloes, golden monkeys plus the most famous endangered Mountain gorillas. The Park also consists of five volcanoes which include Karisimbi, Sabyinyo, Gahinga, Muhabura and Bisoke thus for any birder who will also want to do hiking, the Park is ideal for the activity too.
Nyungwe Forest National Park is inclusive among the best destinations in Rwanda ideal for birding activity because it protects over 275 bird species which provide a brilliant view to the birders, the Park is 7 hours drive from Kigali city. Birders in this Park will also enjoy other activities including chimpanzee tracking which is the most activity in the Park plus a view to other animals such as golden monkey, red-tailed monkey, silver monkey, L’Hoest’s monkeys and many others. Lake Kivu which is along the way from or to the is made up good lodges for the birders and chimpanzee trekkers to live in and these include Lake Kivu Serena Hotel, Paradise Malahinde Guest House among others.
Giswhati Forest Reserve is also a good destination for birders which is found in the North western parts of Rwanda. It is a reserved forest which protects over 84 bird species including the Wood hoopoes, White headed Wood hoopoe, old world warblers and Mountain yellow warbler. Though the reserve is small, you will still have a sight to chimpanzees which are believed to be over 20 chimpanzees. Other animals you are most likely to see in Gishwati forest include blue monkey, golden monkey, L’Hoest’s monkeys, toads, frogs, chameleons, Red River hog, black-fronted duiker and the great lakes bush vipers plus many others.
